Name: Cryptanthus zonatus (Vis.) Beer
Synonym: Pholidophyllum zonatum Vis.
Etymology: The genus name Cryptanthus roughly means “hidden flower.” The specific epithet zonatus means “banded” and refers to the distinctive transverse markings on the leaves.
Origin/Distribution: Brazil.
Location/Habitat: Terrestrial in the understory of tropical forests. We grow this species in warm conditions at around 20–28 °C, with moderate to high humidity and bright, indirect light. The loose, humus-rich substrate should be kept slightly moist and drain well.
Description and notes: Cryptanthus zonatus forms a flat, star-shaped rosette of firm leaves with toothed margins. Its striking banded pattern is characteristic. Ample bright, diffused light helps bring out vivid colors, while intense direct midday sun should be avoided.
