Name: Columnea colombiana (Wiehler) L.P.Kvist & L.E.Skog
Synonyms: Pentadenia colombiana Wiehler
Etymology: The genus name Columnea honors the Italian naturalist Fabio Colonna. The specific epithet colombiana means “Colombian” and refers to the species’ natural range.
First description: Hans Wiehler first described the species in 1977 as Pentadenia colombiana; it was later transferred to the genus Columnea.
Origin/Distribution: Colombia and northwestern Ecuador.
Location/Habitat: Epiphytic in the humid tropical forests of the northern Andes. We grow the species in bright to partially shaded conditions, with high humidity, good air circulation, and temperatures of around 18–28 °C. The substrate should be airy and retain some moisture, and should remain evenly moist but not waterlogged.
Description and notes: Columnea colombiana is a perennial gesneriad with trailing to cascading stems and fleshy leaves. The tubular flowers appear in the leaf axils, creating a striking contrast with the foliage. Its cascading growth habit makes the species particularly well suited to hanging baskets, elevated plant displays, and appropriately humid terrarium conditions.
