Name: Chysis bruennowiana Rchb.f. & Warsz.
Etymology: The genus name Chysis derives from the Greek word for “melting” and refers to the fused pollinia; bruennowiana honors Heinrich Brünnow.
Origin/Distribution: The species is distributed from Central America to northwestern South America.
Location/Habitat: We grow Chysis bruennowiana in warm to intermediate conditions at around 18–28 °C, with bright, filtered light, high humidity, and good air movement. While new growth is developing, the plant receives plenty of water and nutrients.
Description and Notes: The robust, fleshy stems bear pleated leaves and produce striking, waxy flowers. Once the stems have matured and the leaves have fallen, we significantly reduce watering and fertilizing, but do not allow the pseudobulbs to shrivel excessively. We increase watering again as new growth begins.
