Name: Chysis bractescens Lindl.
Etymology: The genus name Chysis is derived from the Greek word for "melting" and refers to the waxy appearance of the flowers. The specific epithet bractescens refers to the conspicuous bracts.
Origin/Distribution: Mexico and Central America.
Location/Habitat: Epiphytic in seasonally moist tropical forests. We recommend a bright, airy location with warm to intermediate temperatures and good air circulation.
Description and notes: Chysis bractescens forms robust, elongated pseudobulbs and large, pleated leaves. The attractive, waxy flowers usually appear on young shoots and are cream-white to yellowish with a contrasting lip. We water and fertilize regularly during active growth. An airy, coarse orchid substrate is particularly suitable. Once growth is complete, watering can be reduced slightly without allowing the plant to dry out completely for extended periods.
