Name: Ceratostema silvicola
Etymology: The genus name Ceratostema derives from Greek and refers to horn-like structures of the flower. The specific epithet silvicola roughly means “forest dweller.”
Origin/Distribution: Tropical Andes of South America.
Location/Habitat: The species is adapted to humid mountain forest conditions. We recommend a bright to partially shaded location with filtered light, high humidity, good air circulation, and intermediate temperatures.
Description and Notes: Ceratostema silvicola is a rare Ericaceae with attractive evergreen foliage and striking tubular flowers. For cultivation, we use a loose, acidic, and very airy substrate that retains moisture without becoming waterlogged. The roots should remain evenly and slightly moist. Soft, low-mineral water is recommended; prolonged heat and standing water should be avoided.
