Name: Goeppertia veitchiana (Veitch ex Hook.f.) Borchs. & S.Suárez
Synonyms: Calathea veitchiana Veitch ex Hook.f.
Etymology: The genus name Goeppertia honors the German botanist Heinrich Göppert. The specific epithet veitchiana commemorates the well-known British gardening family Veitch.
Origin/Distribution: Ecuador.
Location/Habitat: A tropical forest plant suited to warm to intermediate conditions. We recommend bright, filtered light without intense direct sun, high humidity, and a sheltered location.
Description and Notes: Goeppertia veitchiana is a striking foliage plant with large, oval leaves featuring a high-contrast pattern in various shades of green; the undersides of the leaves often show purplish tones. We grow it in a loose, humus-rich, well-draining substrate that is kept evenly moist. Soft water is ideal whenever possible. Waterlogging and allowing the substrate to dry out completely should be avoided. Temperatures of around 18–28 °C and higher humidity promote the development of flawless leaves.
