Name: Bulbophyllum trongquyetii T.P.Anh, Nguyen & V.C.Nguyen
Synonyms:
Etymology: Named in honor of Trong Quyet, who contributed to the discovery or collection of this specific species.
First description: A species described only recently (around 2020/2021) from Vietnam.
Origin / Distribution:
Vietnam (Central Highlands).
Location / Habitat:
Grows epiphytically in primary evergreen broadleaf forests at elevations of approximately 1,000 to 1,500 m. It prefers cool to temperate conditions and very high humidity in partial shade.
Description & Notes:
Bulbophyllum trongquyetii is a fascinating recent discovery within section Brachyantha. The plant is characterized by closely spaced, ovoid pseudobulbs and a single leathery leaf. The inflorescences usually bear a cluster of flowers arranged in a dense tuft. Their coloring ranges from yellow-orange to reddish hues, often with an intensely colored, mobile lip. Morphologically, it resembles Bulbophyllum tanyphyllum, but differs in details of the lip structure and sepals.
In cultivation, the species requires conditions similar to those of Vietnam’s mountain forests: consistent moisture without waterlogging, high humidity (over 70%), and good air circulation. As the species is native to higher elevations, it is sensitive to prolonged heat and benefits from a drop in temperature at night. It is best grown mounted or in shallow trays with fine bark and moss.
