Name: Begonia Rex Cultorum Group ‘Helen Lewis’
Etymology: The genus name Begonia was chosen in honor of Michel Bégon. ‘Helen Lewis’ is the cultivar name of this Rex begonia.
Origin/Breeding: A horticultural cultivar from the Rex Cultorum Group, grown for its exceptional leaf colors and patterns.
Location/Growing conditions: We grow it in bright to partially shaded conditions at around 18–26 °C, with high humidity and good air circulation. We keep the loose, humus-rich substrate evenly slightly moist, but never persistently wet. We avoid intense direct midday sun and cold drafts.
Description and notes: Begonia ‘Helen Lewis’ is a rhizomatous foliage begonia with large, asymmetrical leaves. The dark burgundy to almost black areas of the leaves contrast strikingly with lighter green and silvery markings. The intense leaf color develops especially well in bright, indirect light.
