Product Information "Sowing & Nutrient Medium SBL-A"

Instructions for Use:

Weigh out the required amount of powdered dry product. If there are any lumps, crush them using a mortar or your fingers. Slowly sprinkle the prescribed amount of substrate into 1 l (for 0.5 l, use half the dose, etc.) of boiling distilled or demineralized water and dissolve it. Continue stirring and heating until everything has dissolved: the solution will then be clear to translucent. The pH does not need to be adjusted; depending on the substrate, it will be between 5.0 and 5.5.

Additional natural substance additives or active ingredient additives are generally not necessary, but may be added. When using birch sap as an additive to the nutrient medium, no pH adjustment is required either. However, some natural substance additives, such as unsweetened pineapple juice, do require pH adjustment.

If insoluble or poorly soluble components (sediment) occur in the growing medium—for example, when adding banana purée—the undissolved portion must be distributed evenly among all culture jars.

In practice, the following media have proved particularly suitable for transferring (transplanting) germinated seeds, when the protocorms should be approximately 1 mm in size:

When adding pineapple, the pH must be adjusted drop by drop to pH 5.1 using aqueous ammonia*. It has been shown that freshly prepared combinations of natural substances and nutrient medium are preferable to canned products with a similar composition. Birch sap, pressed pineapple juice, and pineapple-banana homogenate keep very well when stored in a freezer (1–2 years).
