Name: Anthurium warocqueanum T.Moore ‘Big’
Etymology: The genus name Anthurium derives from the Greek words “anthos” (flower) and “oura” (tail). The specific epithet honors the Belgian plant enthusiast Arthur Warocqué; ‘Big’ refers to this large-sized selection.
First described: In 1878 by Thomas Moore.
Origin/Distribution: Colombia.
Location/Habitat: Epiphytic to hemiepiphytic in very humid forests of the Colombian Andes. Suitable conditions include temperatures of about 18–27 °C, high and stable humidity, bright filtered light, and gentle air movement.
Description and notes: The “Queen Anthurium” develops exceptionally long, drooping, velvety dark green leaves with prominent silvery veins. This plant, sold as ‘Big’, is offered in a larger size. An open basket or tall pot and a coarse, very airy substrate provide ample room for the leaves and roots.
