Name: Anthurium exstipulatum Sodiro
Etymology: The genus name Anthurium derives from the Greek words anthos (“flower”) and oura (“tail”). The species epithet exstipulatum roughly means “without stipules.”
First described: In 1902 by Luis Sodiro.
Origin/Distribution: Ecuador.
Location/Habitat: Epiphytic to hemiepiphytic in humid Andean and cloud forests, including at higher elevations. We grow this species in cool to intermediate conditions at around 14–23 °C, with high humidity, good air circulation, and bright to partially shaded indirect light. The substrate should be coarse and very airy, and kept evenly slightly moist.
Description and notes: Anthurium exstipulatum has firm, leathery, dark green leaves with subtle venation. Its new growth is particularly attractive, appearing very dark violet to almost black before maturing to green. A climbing support and consistently good root aeration help support its natural growth habit.
