Name: Bulbophyllum treschii Jenny
Synonyms:
Etymology: treschii — named in honor of Erwin Tresch, a Swiss orchid enthusiast and discoverer of the species.
Origin / Distribution: Central Vietnam (Quảng Nam Province).
Location / Habitat: Epiphytic growing in primary, moist mountain forests at elevations of approximately 400 to 800 m. It prefers shady to partially shaded locations with high year-round humidity and moderate air movement.
Description & Notes: Bulbophyllum treschii belongs to the section Mastigion and is closely related to the better-known Bulbophyllum mastersianum. The plant is characterized by ovate pseudobulbs, each bearing a single, leathery leaf. The inflorescence is an umbel, on which several spectacular flowers are arranged in a circular fashion.
The most striking feature is the elongated lateral sepals, which have an intense reddish-brown to purple coloration and often taper into thread-like filaments, giving the inflorescence a delicate, almost tentacle-like appearance. The lip (labellum) is mobile, as is typical for the genus.
In cultivation, the species requires temperate conditions, a humidity (60–80 %) and should never dry out completely. Due to its creeping rhizome growth, it is ideally suited for cultivation in shallow trays or on cork or bark pieces with a base of sphagnum moss.
